JOINERS BLAIRLOGIE

Here is a short history on Blairlogie:

Carpenter Joiners Blairlogie

Blairlogie is a picturesque village nestled at the base of the southern rock-face of Dumyat, between Stirling and Menstrie in Scotland. Its rich history is intertwined with the development of its architecture, notable residents, and its strategic location.

The village, formerly known as Blair, is part of the Logie parish, which was historically in Perthshire. The ancient Logie Kirk, located to the west, serves as a testament to the area’s longstanding ecclesiastical significance. Blairlogie comprises mainly 17th to 19th-century cottages and was designated as one of central Scotland’s earliest Conservation Areas in 1969, reflecting its architectural and historical importance.

A focal point of Blairlogie is Blairlogie Castle, also known as “The Blair.” The castle’s origins trace back to 1513 when James IV granted the lands to James Spittal, a Stirling-based merchant who served as tailor to Queen Margaret. His son, Alexander Spittal, constructed the initial tower in 1543. In 1582, Alexander’s grandson, Adam Spittal, expanded the structure by adding a stair wing, transforming it into an L-plan tower house. The Spittal family retained ownership until 1767, after which the estate passed to the Dundas family through marriage. Significant renovations occurred in 1891 under Lt Col James Hare of Calder Hall, who modernized the castle while preserving its historical essence.

Architecturally, Blairlogie Castle showcases features typical of Scottish tower houses from the 16th century. The structure is characterized by thick rubble-built walls, harled exteriors, and crow-stepped gables. Notable elements include original windows and a Victorian oriel window on the south gable. The basement houses vaulted cellars, while the first floor historically served as the hall. The surrounding gardens, stables, and summer house enhance the castle’s historical ambiance.

Carpenters BlairlogieThe village’s historical significance is further enriched by its notable residents. Between 1598 and 1609, Alexander Hume, a poet, served as the minister of Logie Kirk. In the 20th century, actor and conservationist Moultrie Kelsall restored an 18th-century building, Kirklea Cottage, as a family home. His efforts in conservation extended to nearby Menstrie Castle, highlighting his commitment to preserving Scottish heritage.

Blairlogie’s strategic location at the foot of Castle Law and near the Ochil Hills has influenced its historical narrative. The village’s proximity to an abandoned copper mine to the east indicates its involvement in historical mining activities, reflecting the broader industrial history of the region.

The village’s architectural landscape offers an unspoiled range of examples from various periods in Scottish history. Notably, Hillside incorporates a restored cottage sold in 1835 by John Marcellus Park of Bergen, New Jersey, after his emigration from Scotland. It retains its village center charm, as does Kirklea, an amalgamation of old estate workers’ cottages.

In summary, Blairlogie’s history is a tapestry woven with threads of architectural evolution, notable personalities, and its strategic geographical setting. The village stands as a testament to Scotland’s rich cultural heritage, reflecting the enduring legacy of its past.
